Painting Into A Corner
‘Painting Into A Corner’ investigates the temporal and physical conditions of site through a series of material interventions questioning our understanding of space as a means of de-programming routine behaviour and experience to open perception.
I am interested in the sculptural qualities that paintings can embody whilst remaining in a painting-heavy conversation, testing how painting can calm and claim a space in a sculptural way, and how, through certain materials and installation strategies, a piece can hover in the air of a room.
Through the concepts of materiality and the monochrome, I have been looking into the construction of painting, the layers and rhythms that are created, and how they sit in a space. By generating a tactile response to fabric and considering the given qualities and rhythms, and being sympathetic to the weave and colour, I have produced a series of handmade Post Minimalist works that allow the material and space to speak for themselves.
With this consideration of Jan Verwoert’s concept of adjacency, I intend to align my work with a feminine response to reductive abstraction and engagement with architecture; opening up soft, calm and gentle environments. Where sheer fabrics are coloured and layered, they obscure, connect and dissolve the solid walls and floors that surround them.
