Mirror Text 1 "I think I could turn into you if I really tried"

Focusing on psychoanalytic theories behind developing self-identity, I have employed portrait photography to convey the concept of an alternate self. This mode of representation holds a key understanding of a subject’s behaviour in relation to the photographic process.

The loss of autonomy experienced once situated in front of the lens is comparable to that of a contrived self or persona. This visual reference is a guide to the theoretical idea of a dual being, accessed through our portal-like, reflective devices. This in turn, has encapsulated my exploration, observation, and personal experiences within a narcissistic display of my sibling as my own alter ego.

Time is an important factor when uncovering such personal connections, as it is the only means to have acquired them in the first place. As a result of the eighteen years spent living in our shared family home, I have come to view siblings as a carbon copy to live vicariously through, expressed through a video format.

Reflected in time-based work, the addition of duration intends to emphasise the temporary reality in which depictions of consciousness can take bodily forms through staged imagery.

The live stream of media that I have come to believe a mirror collects over its lifespan stands as the entrance to a suburban landscape. An intimate showcase of the bedroom setting in which our particular sibling relationship has taken shape. Within a fixed frame one can witness a joint memory log of two distinct lives, converging beyond the surface to create a multifaceted passage between the two linked beings.
