Self Sufficient: A Response to the New Zealand Housing Crisis

The ‘Tiny home’ is constructed in order to maximise space and remove the extraneous and cumbersome objects that we coexist with in a domestic setting. This particular project had to be flexible in design and adaptable as a process. Recycled materials are used throughout the furniture and fit out, requiring a construction process that was malleable and accommodating. These restrictions are aimed towards working with ethical processes of minimising waste, and making use of other waste as a solution. From this perspective, construction costs, land ownership, and land value is up for debate on a large scale.

This project was born through recognising the major housing and homelessness crisis we are facing both in Auckland, and in New Zealand. I wanted to focus on creating a concept that could be used as a potential solution, or at least spark genuine inspiration towards bettering our communities for all.

Herein lies the opportunity for change and a new way of thinking. The concepts of contemporary design, craftsmanship and the handmade remain valid by utilising these resources and skills in an ethically minded practice, regardless of the materials used or the processes involved in production.
