My small suite of donut paintings began as an exploration of colour, shape and space. The paintings within the installation reflect my fascination and obsession with confectionery. I call my paintings ‘donuts’ instead of circular forms, because this adds lightness and humour to the works.

The childlike aesthetic of excess and favourite sweets from childhood became an inspiration for my works. Sweets bring up memories of birthday parties, grocery shopping with mum, and also serve as a reminder of a favourite bakery or a special outing.

Dessert foods subconsciously connect people with feelings such as sadness, boredom, loneliness and, most importantly, with happiness. I am one of those people who desires sweets when I experience certain emotions. I hope viewers can relate to, enjoy and respect the qualities of donuts and the other confectionery that I have made. Some paintings will bring back childhood memories, or times of hesitation when consuming sweet food.

Throughout my practice, I have focused on thinking that it is important to allow my own inclinations and interests to exist in these works, and to be free from concern or anxiety in life.
