We can become confused about where the line between space and place is drawn. When we become accustomed to a certain space, we may begin to understand it as place.

Because place has no fixed identity, we can consider it to be sensed rather than understood. It is an obscure region of awareness rather than something that is clearly demarcated. It is something known to us, somewhere that holds our memories and something that we belong to.

I have realised in my search for a description of place that it is best imagined through the senses and through memory.  An approach that I have taken to preserve my memory of place has been through collecting. The found object comes with its own past and history; the objects I have collected come from one place. Although each object is significant to me, they retain a greater sense of place as my collection.

I am interested in how these objects speak to an environment and to each other. Installation art offers the idea of immersion for the viewer to activate and be activated. I am concerned with how these objects may create an impression of my sense of place, but also provoke the viewer’s own perception of place and spaces.
