Ye-Bin Lee
A friendly Intrusion
Wherever we are we are constantly surrounded by and interacting with the designed object, whether machine fabricated or handmade they all contain a level of human touch. We have grown so accustomed to the physicality of these domestic objects that they easily slip into the back of our consciousness becoming a presence that is integrated into our lives but is rarely acknowledged or recognised. I have been researching about our everyday environment and the aesthetic of the ugly as the main concepts of what we conventionally find attractive or repulsive.
By applying the aesthetic of the ugly into domestic objects that are typically designed to be inconspicuous, comfortable or fashionable, I hope to create a whole other understanding of our restricted world by creating another that contradicts its design. I hope to disrupt our habitual perception of the domestic environment, bringing to light the physicalities and structure of our material world.
“The pleasure of ugliness… is a thirst for the unknown and a taste for the horrible”
