My research explores the craft/fine art binary by creating pottery with kitsch objects.
Doilies once symbolised a woman’s education in craft and protected and decorated objects. Now, they sit abandoned in op shops as cultural tastes have moved on. Since they no longer hold the same cultural meaning, I find a new life for the doilies by embedding them in clay.
On the other hand, cookie cutters are our cultural shorthand for a simplistic, standardised idea, a “cookie-cutter solution.” When art critics like Clement Greenberg critique mass-produced objects, they dismiss them and ignore any potential of the medium. I use cookie cutters in shaping my work to subvert the presentation of a mass-produced symbol.
Since these are works about domesticity, I choose to present them at home and the life of my objects beyond a gallery display.
