Diaspora Blues
The root of diaspora blues cannot be removed, and we have all planted that seed of nostalgia the moment we step out of home.
Based on memory and migration experiences, my work revolves around diaspora and nostalgia.
With hundreds of handwritten tags hanging in the space, I have explored day-to-day conversations with family and friends in another country.
I have extracted a list of words that convey a subtle feeling of that separation and connection: "What is the time over there?", "How have you been?", "Take care"....
These everyday words have never been considered poetic or significant, yet they have been repeated over and over again and are poignant, representing care and maintaining the bond with the far away.
However, hanging by the thinnest thread and using delicate ceramics, the bond with home, at the same time, is vulnerable.
When you move away from home, it’s like that connecting thread is stretched and stretched until, maybe one day, it will break and fall.
