Kanaky is my fate
‘Kanaky is my fate’ presents a constellation of sculptural drawings collated with materials that are foraged en route or ready-made and from home. They are site-specific.
The contexts in which the materials are discovered hold personal relevance such as my birthplace and where I live now, and are all referenced in the installation.
“By mixing the outside and inside I imagine a non-linear conception of space and time. ”
The installation aims to cultivate a sense of belonging in a settler-colonial landscape. The process becomes typographical, spiritually mapping every day with objects and materials I encounter. The plurality of materials and objects creates a more hybrid narrative - a sense of place and placelessness.
I am simultaneously addressing the past, present, and future all at once. Establishing this non-linear presentation of space and time is imperative to the installation. This is similar to the way history operates.
