Steel, ngatu (tapa cloth), ink and sound file.
This work is dedicated to my late pa (grandpa) Saimone Koloamatangi, who was many things but most well-known to me as a composer. The sound component samples one of his late recordings and includes sounds captured outside our ancestral home in Nuku'alofa's CBD. The arch and singular steel structures wrapped in ngatu represent both myself and my late pa in an ongoing, imagined conversation within the vā (relational space). The arch acts as a doorway, inviting the viewer to revisit their own memories. While completing To Pa my nena passed away. I would like to think they have reunited in this space and are laughing away together, proud of the legacy they have left behind.
