Freya Jean is a Tāmaki Makaurau based multi-disciplinary artist. Their art explores themes of ecology, domesticity, memory, and femininity within an aesthetic that is at once kitsch and gothic. Their work exists in dialogue with media and literature, reflecting long term interest and study in those fields.

Their graduate show is a showcase of both ceramic and painted artworks of anthropomorphic gothic creatures, intending to challenge the false binaries between the self/other, animal/human, fantasy/reality, man/woman. The animals painted reflect the local environment, animals that exist closely with humans. The housecat, the bird, the spider, the ewe, at once both domestic and wild.
