The Blood of Sensibility is Blue

Install Shot Head Image

My work is connected to the paradigms of queer theory and phenomenology. It is through these frames that I engage with photography and writing. By combining these two practices I aim to draw viewers into my subjectivity and hold them in an atmospheric forcefield.

In Blue, Derek Jarman stated, “The blood of sensibility is blue, I consecrate myself to find its most perfect expression.” This work responds to the notion of consecrating oneself by employing processes of self-writing, and photographing subjects which resonate with a metaphoric ability to see.

Installation has been a key component in examining how photography and creative writing can coexist in an exhibition environment. Throughout the project I have been interested in utilising both precision and ‘weakness’. This balance has been explored by means of ephemeral gestures and experiments with printed surface. Through my research I developed a strategy of minimizing the amount of work in a given space, finding that in sparsity there can be vulnerability and poignancy.
